Somatic Experiencing within Massage

In the world of massage therapy, we often talk about the importance of relaxation, relief from physical tension, and a sense of rejuvenation. But have you ever wondered about the deeper connection between your mind and body during a massage? How does this synergy influence the therapeutic benefits of your session? Today, we'll explore the fascinating concept of somatics in massage therapy and how it aligns with the principles discussed in "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk.

Understanding Somatics

Somatics, in essence, is the study of the body as a holistic entity—a vessel that holds our emotions, experiences, and memories. It's the understanding that our physical sensations, movements, and posture are interconnected with our emotional and psychological states.

In his groundbreaking book "The Body Keeps the Score," Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, a renowned psychiatrist, delves into the profound relationship between trauma, the body, and the mind. He discusses how trauma can become "trapped" in the body, affecting our physical well-being and mental health. This book has not only transformed the field of psychology but also shed light on how somatics can play a pivotal role in healing.

The Mind-Body Connection in Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a practice deeply rooted in the mind-body connection. When you lay on the massage table and surrender to the therapist's touch, you embark on a journey of profound relaxation and healing. Here's how somatics comes into play during your massage session:

1. Sensation Awareness

"The Body Keeps the Score" emphasizes the importance of tuning into physical sensations as a means of healing. During a massage, you're encouraged to become more aware of how your body feels. The gentle kneading of muscles, the rhythmic strokes, and the release of tension—these sensations create a bridge between your body and mind. It's a moment to acknowledge and process what your body is experiencing.

During a session, I also like to target trigger points that are associated with holding onto certain emotions. I have studied the meridian system as well and use that information to help guide my intentions for healing along the way. I might place pressure in a particular knot and encourage you to associate that “hurt-so-good” feeling trigger points bring to us, with the emotional conflicts you may be experiencing.

2. Releasing Tension

Trauma and stress can manifest as physical tension in your muscles. A skilled massage therapist can help you release this tension, allowing not only physical relief but also emotional release. It's a way of freeing your body from the burdens it may have been carrying.

Something I have loved to incorporate into sessions to really play into this, is stretching. I love introducing the body to feelings of safety while encouraging more space to be created from within to allow oneself to feel the emotions we tend to keep hidden. Stretching can be a powerful tool in reminding you of your body’s resilience and capabilities, and also its boundaries, which we often lose sight of in this world of distraction.

3. Mindful Presence

Massage therapy promotes mindfulness—a state of being fully present in the moment. As you focus on the sensations and the therapist's touch, your mind quiets. This state of mindfulness aligns with somatic practices that encourage reconnecting with the body to promote healing.

To wrap things up…

Incorporating somatics into massage therapy enhances its therapeutic potential. It allows you to tap into the profound mind-body connection, facilitating emotional release, relaxation, and healing. So, the next time you book a massage session, remember that it's not just about your physical body—it's about your entire being, working together in harmony.

& if you want to take it a step further, check out the integrated healing offerings and book a session, or reach out with any questions, dear friend! "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk reminds us that healing is a holistic journey, and massage therapy is a valuable ally in that journey. Embrace the mind-body connection, and let your body tell its story.
